Health and the Havanese
Havanese are a very robust and healthy breed - dogs can live well into their teens. As with all breeds, applicable health screening of parent dogs and responsible breeding practices are required to ensure the health, both physical and emotional, of these special dogs.
Genetic Issues
There have been some genetic issues with some Havanese - early onset or juvenile cataracts, hip and knee issues, heart and liver issues to name a few. Research conducted at Texas A & M University on the genetic characteristics of the Havanese breed have recently concluded that all of these outward signs of ill health are symptoms of 'Ockham Syndrome'. This syndrome, discovered by these researchers, is responsible for the abnormalities sometimes found with the breed.
Genetically Traced
This Syndrome was genetically traced to a particular group of dogs introduced in Arizona several decades ago - now known as 'the Arizona dogs'.
This is all very good news for responsible breeders who can now be sure that their dogs are free of these bloodlines and free of the outward conformation flaws which signal the presence of the Syndrome. |
Conclusions
A knowledgeable breeder should be open to discussion about these issues, the A & M University study and it's conclusions, and how these conclusions affect their breeding dogs.
